Invoking classic Arabic calligraphy in a fresh, modern font, the typeface combines heritage with a contemporary vibe. The said typeface is based on the calligraphic style of traditional Arabic lettering. and reflects Qatar’s heritage as well as its future. The design is intended to be timeless and can be used in any context.
In addition to taking inspiration from the FIFA World Cup Trophy, the emblem’s core also used the conventional wool shawl. Shawls are a common wintertime accessory used all around the world. This may allude to the fact that the World Cup coincides with the winter. Nevertheless, the wool shawl is an important accessory in Arab and Gulf countries. The winter outfit with regional inspiration also makes reference to the start dates of the competition and the fact that it will be the first FIFA World Cup to be held in November and December.
The emblem also uses the infinite symbol, stylized in the number 8—which is meant to symbolize the event’s “interconnected character and its resemblance to the number eight relating to the number of stadiums utilized.
Unique Arabic Calligraphy
The Arabic calligraphy on the Qatar 2022 logo used on the 2022 World Cup logo is symbolic and unique. The writing style, called Naskh (نسخ), has been used in Arabic writing since the 7th century, but it only started to appear on logos like this one. It was designed by Hassan Al-Thawadi, who created a special font just for this occasion.
