Millennial Marketing 101: How Great Design Can Draw In the Younger Market to Your Brand

The millennial market is a consumer force to be reckoned with—which is why millennial marketing is important. Even if millennials are not your primary target, creating a design that appeals to them will help drive up your sales and establish your brand’s identity online.

Although, one thing is for sure—making a strong brand identity doesn’t happen overnight. Experienced company leaders know that they need to approach the design strategically in order for it to be effective. Not only does this require brainstorming, but it also demands a team that has strong communication and design skills, and a deep understanding of what your brand stands for.

Creating a brand identity may seem impossible, but that’s not always the case. In this article, we’ll talk about three major tips you need to know when creating a brand identity that appeals to the millennial market. But first, why is millennial marketing important in the first place?

Why Should You Market to Millennials?

Millennials are the group of people born between 1980 and 2000 that are so economically valuable that forward-thinking marketers drop their existing methods just to cater to them.

Millennials represent a huge segment of the world’s population and are slowly overtaking the population of the Boomers and Baby Boomers generation. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Millennials in the United States numbered 72.1 million in 2019—their population is predicted to peak in 2033 at 74.9 million in the United States alone.

Right now, Millennials may not be in their peak spending years just yet but they’re entering it fast. This information makes them an essential target market for consumer companies. Before they enter their spending years, it’s important for marketers to get in front of them as early as now

Millennial Marketing Design Trends

Millennials are a generation of well-rounded individuals, and they’re known to be extremely loyal to the brands they love. But how do you get them to love your brand?

There are three important things you need to know when marketing to millennials:

1. Millennial marketing color trends

As a generation that constantly wants everything to be “on fleek,” it’s important to dive deeper into the type of colors that are popular in the millennial market.

It’s common to see B2B brands align their brand color with something authoritative like red, blue, and in some cases green—but if you want to cater to a millennial market, take the time to come up with an original concept.

Popular marketing millennial trends often involve authenticity and subtle personality. Colors like rose gold, spearmint green, baby blue, or salmon pink are the most common color palettes that attract millennials. A perfect example to look at is Apple’s products.

Apple has always stuck with chromatic colors such as white, black, and grey as its branding color. It wasn’t until the release of the iPhone 5c and the iPod mini line when we saw a pop of color in their products. In recent years, Apple started releasing flagship devices in colors that are far from their early 2000’s color palette. The new iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 12, and now even iMacs and MacBooks can be bought in a variety of colors such as red, light lavender, yellow, metallic green, and millennial pink for a more sophisticated look that became the talk of the town overnight. Apple understood that the market is changing and adapting to that change is a crucial step they can’t afford to miss.

Although, on the contrary, not all millennials like pastel and organic colors. There is still a percentage of millennials that would go for the classic minimalist tones and 80’s color palettes such as neon and bold colors.

2. Minimalist web page designs

One of the most bulletproof millennial marketing solutions you can use to attract them is minimalist designs. No wonder brands like Muji and Uniqlo are popular—their brands have a minimalist approach not just on their products, but also on their websites.

It’s a common mistake by companies to overcrowd their web page with elements that are not necessarily working in their favor. Millennials are simple and the only way to impress them is by having a clean and modern site.

Minimalistic sites are easy to use, timeless, and they can build trust in an instant. Some of the advantages that come with minimalist sites are:

  • Fast website loading speed
  • Straightforward content
  • Mobile friendly

Millennials want instant gratification. Your website should only take 2-5 seconds to load or else they will bolt.

3. Choosing the right typography is important

Let it be known that content is king when it comes to marketing, especially when you’re marketing to millennials. Not only that, but the fonts you use also affect how they see your brand.

Using the right font gives you the upper hand to choose which emotions you want your viewers to feel. For millennials, they prefer to see a versatile, clean, and professional design rather than a cluttered and messy look.

One of the font styles you can use is Serif. It’s known as a traditional font but it has become the go-to style that is commonly used by companies that want to establish their brand as a supreme and trustworthy brand.
